War at Sea
A vital part of the war for both the Greeks and Ottomans was the Navy. If the Greeks could control the waters of the Mediterranean they would stop the Ottomans from being able to resupply their soldiers on the mainland. The Ottoman Navy was much more equipped for war than the Greek Navy. The Greek Navy was handled mainly by Aegean Islanders who manned, supplied, and equipped their own fleets with their own admirals. The Ottoman fleet was manned by thousands of soldiers and equipped with guns and cannons. The Ottomans were supplied with resources from their enormous empire. The Greeks however, had a secret weapon, Greek Fire. Greek Fire were flamethrowers equipped to ships. The Greeks utilized them to destroy many Ottoman ships, including the destruction of an Ottoman flagship by Constantine Kanaris at the island of Chios, after the population was massacred in 1822.
